Good news for residents at Holmesdale Gardens

February 26, 2012

The Castle Ward Forum committee has agreed to fund a new grit bin for Holmesdale Gardens

At the beginning of the month I took residents’ views about icy pavements to the Castle Ward Forum committee.

I am pleased to say that at its last meeting, the committee agreed to fund a new grit bin for Holmesdale Gardens, and we are in the process of sorting the siting of it with East Sussex County Council.

As per Mr Walker-Hill’s recent letter in the paper about Wallinger’s Walk, please do get in touch and let me know if there are other difficult and dangerous areas that were not dealt with properly in the recent cold snap.

It shouldn’t be too much to expect that the relevant local government authority will make safe our roads and steep walkways…

I don’t know if this has been mentioned before, but not only is Wallingers Walk a danger to anyone who attempts to walk down it in the cold snaps, but also Castledown Avenue its self becomes extremely dangerous to car drivers and pedestrians. In the cold winter snaps of 2010 – 2011 the road was only gritted after car accidents occurred. This winter it wasn’t gritted again and there were close calls with a few cars (I live in the Avenue). This road is one way road, there are two ways out either back up Castle Hill road or down Castle Hill road. When cars try to go up the road they just slide backwards and its a very brave person who attempts to slide down the hill. Both exits are in the shade so become icy and stay icy. The only safe way, if you’ve manage to get into the road, via Wellington road without sliding into the fence at the top of Wallingers Walk, is to go back the same way. Though dangerous, because of going the wrong way on a one way street, its safer as its not so shaded and doesn’t stay icy as long as Castle Hill road.

I don’t drive and when the icy conditions occur I can not get out. Even when the main roads are passable and there is no snow or ice in town, the snow and ice stays much longer in Castledown Avenue. Its not far to walkable paths just down Wallengers walk or Castle Hill road. But they are always to dangerous in this kind of weather.
