Nick writes to Dame Jenny Abramsky as Heritage Lottery Fund poised to decide on Pier funding application

April 17, 2011

Dear Dame Jenny,

You will know, no doubt, that the coming week is an absolutely crucial one for the future of Hastings & St Leonards.

We are a seaside town attempting to progress real, community-led regeneration, and I know that there is agreement across the political spectrum about the fact that Hastings Pier, and what becomes of it, has a central role to play in our success.

I hope and trust that you have received many letters from Hastings residents, politicians and representatives of business, public and third sector organisations.

We are all four-square behind the Hastings Pier & White Rock Trust – they are a wonderful bunch of big-hearted enthusiasts, who not only have a genuine love for our Grande-Dame of a pier, but also have the practical know-how and social enterprise acumen to make a great success of their plans. They are (in my view) regeneration pioneers for the Great British Seaside.

There are all sorts of reasons why we, as a country, should be backing the regeneration of our seaside towns – from environmental, through economic to health and welfare.

And there are all sorts of reasons why you, as the Heritage Lottery Fund, will make a huge difference to these efforts by backing this bid to secure the future of Hastings Pier.

The Liberal Democrats have backed the Pier Trust from the very outset. But we are by no means the only ones.

The whole town of Hastings & St Leonards has taken the Pier to its heart. We want to see this iconic structure preserved and enhanced for generations to come. And we know that the planned work that your funding would facilitate can engage this present, and future generations to develop themselves, their skills, their entrepreneurialism, and their belief that the Great British Seaside can have a prosperous future.

We leave the decision in your hands.

With every best wish; yours truly,
