Nick petitions Lib Dem leadership to keep pledge to students

Nick Perry, the Lib Dem parliamentary spokesperson for Hastings & Rye, has joined over one hundred other Lib Dem candidates for the 2010 General Election, to petition the party’s leadership to keep the pledge to students that all Lib Dem candidates made prior to the General Election.

Nick says, “I met with Vince Cable MP in Eastbourne in October to listen to his reasoning for accepting the measures in the Browne Report. The system that he is planning is certainly more progressive than anything produced by the Labour Government, or that the Conservatives would produce on their own; or, ironically, than the NUS have suggested.

“However this is a totemic issue for the Lib Dems. Such is the commitment of the party to free higher education that the Coalition Agreement includes an opt-out clause on the subject of tuition fees.

“Unfortunately a collective abstention by us Liberal Democrats is not a clear enough statement of intent. If I was a member of the parliamentary party, I would be voting against any increase in tuition fees on Thursday.”
