Fishermen’s petition is given to Minister

September 2, 2010

Very many thanks to those members of the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society – particularly John Griffin and Ali – for their help in securing nearly 4,000 signatures for the petition to the Fisheries Minister asking for a fair share of quota for our under-10s.

The petition was first started nearly a year ago at the Seafood & Wine Festival 2009.

Due to the difficulties encountered in getting the previous Minister – Huw Irranca Davies – to listen to the ongoing difficulties facing our fleet, the petition was not delivered to DEFRA, and was saved to give to the new Minister, to show the level of support and local backing for our fishermen.

On Tuesday, at the East Hastings Angling Club, Richard Benyon MP came to discuss the urgent action that is required to enable our fleet to survive.

This will take action not kind words. The Minister needs to stick his neck out.

I was glad to be able to attend the meeting, and as well as presenting the petition to Richard Benyon, I reminded him that the plight of our fishermen is exactly the kind of cause that the Coalition Government should be about – fairness, enterprise and environmentalism.

There are no Lib Dem ministers in DEFRA. We are dependent on Mr Benyon and his Conservative colleagues to deliver. My fervent hope is that they will.
