Nick joins Lynne for Dungeness summit

March 2, 2010

I was very pleased to be invited to a public meeting called by my Lib Dem colleague, parliamentary candidate for Folkestone & Hythe, Lynne Beaumont at the RSPB Visitor Centre at Dungeness yesterday.

Lynne is also the Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Shepway District Council, and the public meeting was to take soundings about her big idea – the branding of Romney Marsh as a Green Tourism destination.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm and positivity in the room, and many congratulations to Lynne for having the pluck and the energy to start what is a massive communications task.  A big part of the challenge is going to be getting the different District and County Council representatives around the table, to get people to leave party politics at the door and concentrate on the need for change in order to bring prosperity to the Marsh.

My own work to explore the possibilities for Dungeness C in respect of renewable energy projects (following the Government decision not to go ahead with a new nuclear power station) will sit well with this new initiative.  There are all sorts of education spin-offs to green energy projects which will add to Romney Marsh’s attractiveness as a self-contained Green Tourism destination.

We must see Romney Marsh as a whole – from Rye to Hythe and North to South – and learn to overcome administrative boundaries.

It is a challenge of joined-up thinking, mutualism and forward planning.  The project must first be a conversation and be owned by local people.

I will be doing everything I can to help Lynne to achieve what is a fantastic vision for Romney Marsh.
