Local Lib Dems press Miliband to prioritise Rye for renewables

December 30, 2009

Nick Perry, the Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye, is pressing the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband MP, to prioritise our area for new renewable energy projects.

This follows the Government’s decision to take Dungeness off the list for new nuclear power stations.

Nick has written to the Minister again, following the Copenhagen Summit on climate change.

Nick said, “I appreciate that you have been busy with the Copenhagen Summit over the last few weeks. Now that it is over, I would be grateful for a response soonest to the issues that I raised in my email of mid-November.”

Speaking to the Observer during the Christmas period he added, “The issues raised by the omission of Dungeness from the list of new nuclear power stations is of vital importance to our local community – particularly in respect of its implications for employment.

“It is my firm view that new renewable energy projects are a helpful way of mitigating the employment effects of the decision in respect of Dungeness. I hope that the Government will be willing to sponsor a survey of our area’s capacity in respect of new renewable energy projects, and to prioritise the development of them here.

“In the meantime, I will continue to work to get answers to these important questions”, said Nick.
