Annual Town Meeting fails Rye residents

April 3, 2009

rye-imageNick Perry, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye, has slammed Rye Town Council and said that its Annual Town Meeting (held last Wednesday) failed Rye residents.

Speaking after the meeting Nick said,

“I was really pleased to see so many local residents and business people wanting to hold their Town Council to account.

“I am sure there will have been attendees who were unhappy about the willingness (or otherwise) of some councillors to answer their questions, and the management of the agenda.

“However my main criticism is reserved for the venue itself. It was inadequate both in terms of space and the sound system.

“Much of the meeting will have been inaudible for those who have difficulties with their hearing, as I do.

“Rye deserves a modern and spacious facility for civic occasions and other, commercial uses. I wonder if Mr Lees and others’ passion for a new theatre in Rye might be complementary to this?

“If so much of Rother District Council’s money wasn’t earmarked for Bexhill, then maybe it could have one.”
