Nick says Rye Local Action Team must budget to engage young people

February 1, 2009

nick-with-sonia-holmes-lat-chair1At its public meeting on Saturday held at Rye Community Centre, the Rye Local Action Team fed back the results of their recent crime survey.

Sergeant John Berry of Sussex Police said that the results of the survey were mostly pleasing, but there were issues to follow up, and residents’ concerns about burglary, for example, will shape operational strategy.

Following the meeting, Nick Perry, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye said,

“I am pleased to hear from Sergeant Berry that the Police and the LAT are listening to local people, and that the survey responses will influence community safety plans locally.

“As the LAT has admitted themselves, it is important to get as much feedback from the community as possible.

“I am concerned that less than 10% of the 200 responses were from people under the age of 44, and that there were no responses whatsoever from the 16-24 age group.

“The LAT needs to be creative and must plan to engage younger people in its survey work. Not only because it is important for the future of Rye, but also because statistically, young people are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators.

“If engaging younger people costs money, then the LAT must budget for it.”
