Report signals more bad news on post offices

June 2, 2008

A parliamentary select committee report has revealed today that Government-owned Post Office Ltd cannot guarantee that the post office network will not undergo further cuts.

Commenting on the news, local Lib Dem campaigner Nick Perry says,

“This is the last thing we want to hear. It means that there could be further cuts across the constituency. Our MP’s confidence in Labour’s handling of the issue seems entirely misplaced.

“Local people want some reassurance that no more cuts are on the way, and we want it quickly. Local Lib Dems are already petitioning to make sure that people’s voices are heard. Please log in and sign up!”

Liberal Democrat Shadow Business Secretary, Sarah Teather MP said:

“This Government has no plan to save the post office network.

“It has presided over the managed decline of out post office system, with 2,500 post offices in Britain currently facing closure.

“Post office cuts weigh heavily on the elderly, the poor and the vulnerable members of our society. Further cuts to this valuable social asset are a betrayal of the very people who voted for a Labour Government in 1997.”
