Nick supports Hastings Against War Gaza Vigil

nick-supports-haw-gaza-vigilLib Dem parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye, Nick Perry, attended the vigil organised by local group Hastings Against War on Saturday in Hastings town centre.

After the event Nick said, “Hastings Against War is absolutely right to want to show solidarity with the innocent civilians that are suffering in Gaza at this time.

“As a nation, we must make our protest against the disproportionate actions of Israel in due humility. It is the shaming truth that our international reputation has been done untold damage by the foreign policy record of the current Government.”

Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg MP is calling for the European Union to flex its economic muscles in order to achieve a ceasefire. He said,

“With the US Administration hobbled by the transition between Presidents, it is time for the EU to act. The EU has enormous potential leverage in the Middle East as the major donor of aid to the Palestinian community and the main market for Israeli exports…”

“EU Foreign Ministers must immediately suspend the proposed new agreement with Israel. The deal cannot proceed until there is a transformation of the conditions on the ground in Gaza.”

Nick urges Lib Dem colleagues to protect the Seaview Project

nick-visits-the-seaview-projectNick Perry, Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye, visited the Seaview Project (Southwater Road, St Leonards on Sea) last Tuesday to offer support during the holiday period.

Nick spent time with staff and volunteers finding out more about the work of the project and the current issues of concern.

Speaking after the visit, Nick said,

“Through my work in mental health care I was already aware of the role of the Seaview Project, but I wanted to come and get a better understanding of the nitty gritty from the staff and the volunteers.

“The Day Centre is a crucial resource for our area, especially at Christmas and New Year, but I also have learnt about the valuable work that the Floating Support Team is doing.

“What has struck me more than anything is the passion that the staff and the volunteers have for this difficult and complex work.

“I understand that the funding for Seaview is only secure until March 2010 at this point. As an employee of the County Council, I will not be able to get directly involved in the campaign to secure Seaview’s future, but I have contacted the Lib Dem Group at County Hall and have made it clear to them just how valuable Seaview and its staff is to our area, and that Lib Dems must be advocating for this project whenever and wherever we can.”
